Focus on being seen and heard to demonstrate your expertise and grow your career
Growing your career in an organization requires that you stay on leadership’s radar. The most effective way to stay on leadership’s radar is to continuously be heard and seen. However, finding opportunities to be heard and seen can be difficult. To create more opportunities you must stay in front of other’s across three key dimensions. Interacting in-person, virtually, and digitally will increase the number of opportunities to be heard and seen, as well as create a steady drum beat of repeat interactions with those that can help you grow your career.
Focus on these three dimensions to increase your exposure with key leaders.
In-person Face to Face Interaction
Opportunities to meet in person are especially important. While relationships can be created virtually, nothing is more impactful to building a relationship than meeting face to face. Seek opportunities to meet in person with key leaders. Get to know them and share how you contribute to the success of the organization. Build a relationship by continuing to find ways to interact with them in person.
Virtual Interaction on Conference Calls
Conference calls are a great opportunity to speak up and share your expertise. Know the agenda in advance of the call and select a topic you are knowledgeable and passionate about to share your thoughts. Highlight others great ideas when given the opportunity. Make small talk with others while waiting for the call to begin. The more ways you find to speak up and interact the better.
Digital Interactions on Social Networks
Social networks are a great way to bridge the gap when you can’t be face to face. Connecting with leadership from your company on social networks expands your visibility by creating a powerful communication channel to share your expertise and insights. Share relevant work-related content and authentically comment and like leader’s posts. Comment on relevant third-party articles and demonstrate that you’re a thought leader in your area of expertise. Social networks combined with in person and conference call interactions create powerful multi-dimensional visibility.
Being seen and heard is foundational to growing in your organization. Staying on the right people’s radar will enable you growth opportunities and positively influence other’s perception of you. Focusing on creating frequency of interaction across these three important dimensions places you front and center. Having the right visibility with the right people will accelerate your career growth.
